Consultant Gastroenterologist  – The Role

Ref: 337

We are looking to  recruit a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join a well-established and collegial gastroenterology service. This is an excellent opportunity for a specialist looking for a balanced job plan, academic opportunities, and a fantastic lifestyle in one of New Zealand’s most liveable regions.

About the Role
The Gastroenterology Department provides a comprehensive range of services to a population of approximately 180,000 people across the  district.  The successful candidate will join a supportive multidisciplinary team delivering general gastroenterology care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
Services provided include:
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy
  • ERCP
  • Liver elastography
  • Outpatient gastroenterology clinics
  • Inpatient gastroenterology care
  • National bowel cancer screening programme
The hospital is a busy secondary care centre providing most medical and surgical specialties. It is also the base for a regional head and neck oncology service serving a population of approximately 550,000, providing exposure to complex gastrointestinal aspects of tertiary cancer care.

An average work schedule consists of 10 sessions per week, structured to support both clinical excellence and professional development. This includes six clinical sessions, comprising four patient-facing sessions and two non-patient-facing sessions dedicated to activities such as administration, multidisciplinary team meetings, and reporting.

In addition, there are two non-clinical sessions allocated for research, teaching, and contributing to service development and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

The job plan also includes two off sessions, which provide protected time that may be used to pursue private practice or other personal or professional interests once the successful candidate is fully vocationally registered.

The on-call commitment is currently 1:8.
