Consultant Anaesthetist
Ref:335
The service provides healthcare to approximately 640,000 people, the largest population served by any district in New Zealand.
This role offers a broad and varied anaesthetic workload, including most subspecialties excluding cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, and transplant surgery.
Opportunities include:
-
A well-established Perioperative Medicine Service, including CPET testing
-
Accredited training site for the ANZCA perioperative medicine programme
-
Comprehensive acute, chronic, and transitional pain services (fellowship or interest in pain medicine welcomed)
-
Busy obstetric services across both hospitals, managing approximately 7,500 births annually
Senior Medical Officers are typically onsite during evenings and weekends to support trainees and manage acute workloads. Participation in the on-call roster is expected following completion of a supported orientation period. A commitment to teaching and supervision is an essential component of the role.
The hospital welcomes applications from overseas-trained specialist anaesthetists who are seeking long-term roles in New Zealand.
The successful candidate will have broad general anaesthetic experience, a strong commitment to clinical excellence, education, and quality improvement, and a genuine interest in working within a collaborative public healthcare system. Applicants must hold FANZCA or an equivalent specialist qualification (such as UK, Irish, Australian, or comparable training) and be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.
The hospital is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and culturally safe workforce and encourage applications from Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled clinicians, and those from rainbow communities.
Location
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most diverse city, offering a vibrant lifestyle with beautiful beaches, world-class dining, and easy access to outdoor adventures. The region provides excellent schooling options and a family-friendly environment. Both hospital sites offer on-site parking and are well connected by public transport.
