Happy New Year – What can we expect from 2018?

Happy New Year from us all in the Transition Medical team!

2017 was a great year for us, when we saw lots of happy GPs arriving down under to start their new lives! We had some great feedback which you can read on our testimonials page.

So, what can we expect from 2018?

Australia Visa Changes

Last year the Australian government announced the abolishment of the 457-temporary visa stream to be replaced by a new temporary visa in March. This new visa will allow stays of up to either two or four years. There will be increased experience, English language and market testing requirements.

As a GP, you will see very little difference as you are already required to meet these additional requirements through your registration process.

Changes to DWS

Overseas trained GPs in Australia are required to work in a District of Workforce Shortage also known as DWS.  This is a geographical area in which the local population has less access to Medicare subsidised services compared with the national average. DWS is put in place by the Australian Government to achieve an equitable distribution of medical services across Australia.

These areas are reviewed every February so some areas may gain or lose their DWS status. If there is a particular area you’re interested in (particularly close to a larger city) then please get in touch sooner rather than later. We will provide an update when these areas have been reviewed.
